Word of God – Jesus’ Preeminence in the NT

Matthew 5:18Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.  I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.  For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.”

Hebrews 1:1-3“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.  The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.  After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”

1 Corinthians 1:20-21“Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”

The Word of God – False Prophets & Doctrine

Deuteronomy 13:1-5“If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder, and if the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and he says, “Let us follow other gods” (gods you have not known) “and let us worship them,” you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul. It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him. That prophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he preached rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery; he has tried to turn you from the way the Lord your God commanded you to follow. You must purge the evil from among you.”

Jeremiah 5:31The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof

Mark 4:24“And he said unto them,Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.”          (Judgment Commanded)

John 8:44-45“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.  And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.”

Acts 20:28-30“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.  For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.  Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.”

Romans 16:17-18“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.  For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.”

1 Corinthians 1:18-25“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.  For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.  Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?  For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.  For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”

1 Corinthians 5:12-13“For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?  But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.” (Judgment Commanded)

1 Corinthians 6:2-5“Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life? If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.  I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?              (Judgment Commanded)

1 Corinthians 11:31  “For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.” (Judgment Commanded)

2 Corinthians 10:5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”

2 Corinthians 11:12-15“But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.  For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.  And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”

Galatians 1:6-10“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.  As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.  For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ..”

Ephesians 4:11-14“It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.”*

Ephesians 5:6-11Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.”*              (Judgment Commanded)

Colossians 2:4I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.”*                                         (Judgment Commanded)

Colossians 2:8 – “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”  (Judgment Commanded)

Colossians 2:18-19Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you for the prize. Such a person goes into great detail about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind puffs him up with idle notions. He has lost connection with the Head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.”*  (Judgment Commanded)

1 Thessalonians 5:6 “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.                                                                (Judgment Commanded)

1   Thessalonians 5:21Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.   (Judgment Commanded)

2 Thessalonians 2:1-4“Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by some prophecy, report or letter supposed to have come from us, saying that the day of the Lord has already come. Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.”*    (Judgment Commanded)

1 Timothy 4:16Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.”* (Judgment Commanded)

1 Timothy 6:20-21“Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have wandered from the faith. Grace be with you.”*              (Judgment Commanded)

2 Timothy 2:23-25“Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth”*

2 Timothy 3:1-7 – “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.”*

2 Timothy 3:12-14“In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it”*

2 Timothy 4:3For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine.  Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.”*

Titus 1:9-2:1He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain.  . . . Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of those who reject the truth. To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good. You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine.”*    (Judgment Commanded)

2 Peter 1:16“We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.”*

2 Peter 1:20-2:3“Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.”*

1 John 4:1-3“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.”*        (Judgment Commanded)

2 John 7Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.”*

Jude 1:3“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”      (Judgment Commanded)

Judgment

Hebrews 5:13-14  – “For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.  But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

(We must realize that many times judgment is demanded of us according to God’s Word, as seen in: Mark 4:24; Acts 20:28-30; Romans 16:17-18; Ephesians 5:6; Colossians 2:4; 2:8; 2:18-19; I Corinthians 5:12,13; 6:2-5; 11:31;14:29; I Thessalonians 5:6; 5:21; II Thessalonians 2:1-4; I Timothy 4:16; 6:20-21; II Timothy 2:23-25; Titus 1:9; I John 4:1-3; and Jude 1:3.  As compared to other situations where in the Word of judgment is not allowed, or that there are conditions such as: Matthew 7:1; Colossians 2:16; and James 2:4;4:11,12).

Faith

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions [don’t Babel, be specific], as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Israel

Isaiah 9:6-7“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, the everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Isaiah 11:11 – “11. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.”

*Isaiah 63:1“Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.’

Jeremiah 31:35-37“Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The Lord of hosts is his name: If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the Lord, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.  Thus saith the Lord; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the Lord.”

Ezekiel 36:22-24“Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God; I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name’s sake, which ye have profaned among the heathen, whither ye went.  and I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, saith the Lord God, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.  For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.”

Ezekiel 37:11-14“Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.  Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.  And ye shall know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves, O My people, and brought you up out of your graves, And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the Lord have spoken it, and performed it, saith the Lord.”

*Hosea 5:15I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.

*Hosea 6:1-2“Come, and let us return unto the Lord: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.  After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.”

*Zechariah 12:9-10“And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have [Alph/Tau] pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

Zechariah 13:6 “And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.”

Zechariah 13:8-9“And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.   And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.” (1st Holocaust took 1 in 3, this will take 2 in 3)

(Replacement Theology – Those that say Israel is no longer God’s people – call God a liar – therefore God is calling them liars)

Romans 11:25“For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.”  (Israel is in disbelief until the Rapture of the Church)

Man

Psalm 143:1-2“Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.  And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.”

Romans 3:10-18“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.  They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.  Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Tongue Displays Heart

Mark 7:18-23“And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?  And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”

Matthew 12:34-37“O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things?for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.  A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.  But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.  For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”

Romans 10:9-10“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Law & Sin

Romans 3:20“Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”

Anti-Christ

Daniel 11:21-45“And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.  And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant.  And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.  He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time.  And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him.  Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain.  And both these kings’ hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.  Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land.  At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter. For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.  And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days.  Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries.  And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.  And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.  Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain. And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.  He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.  He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.  But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many. And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.”

Lucifer

Ezekiel 28:12-19“Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the Beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.  Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.  Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.  By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.  Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.  Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.  All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.”

Isaiah 14:12-20“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!  For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.  Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.  They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?  All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.  But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.  Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.”

Revelation 12:1-17 – “And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth. And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

This is he which received seed by the way side.  But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.  He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.  But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”

Matthew 15:6“…Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.”

Matthew 18:21-22“Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.”

Matthew 24:4-12“Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.  For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ, ’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.”

Matthew 24:24-27For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time. “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the desert,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.”

Luke 9:23-25“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.  For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away”

Luke 16:1-8“And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.  And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.  Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed.  I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.  So he called every one of his lord’s debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?  And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.   Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore.  And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.”

Esther

Esther: “Something Hidden”

Although Esther comes after Nehemiah in the Bible, its events antedate Nehemiah by about 30 years. Esther made possible the work of Nehemiah: Except for her, Jerusalem might never have been rebuilt, and there might have been a very different story to tell to all future ages.  If the Hebrew nation had been wiped out 500 years before it brought Christ into the world, it might have made a gigantic difference in the destiny of mankind!  No Messiah for a lost world. (Xerxes I is the Ahasuerus of Esther: Khshayarsha, Greek translation: Xerxes; Hebrew: Akhashverosh; English: Ahasuerus.  Xerxes dishonored the remains of the heroic Spartan, Leonidas.)

·         Saul was commanded by God to destroy (1 Samuel 15:1-3) all of the Amalekites (Amalek descended from Esau – Gen.36:12, and fought with Israel at Rephidim – Ex 17:8-16), Saul disobeyed by not killing their king, Agag (1 Samuel 15:7-28); King Agag’s descendent was Haman (Esther 3:1).

·         David displayed grace by declining to take vengeance on Shimei (2 Sam 16:5-13; 19:16-23).  Shimei’s descendent was Mordecai of the House of Kish, the father of King Saul,

By one man’s disobedience (Saul), an agent of the devil, an aspiring dictator who would seek the genocide of all of Israel came into the world, yet by the grace of another man (David), and agent of God, who would be the aspiring dictator, would also be born into the world.

Many times we do not understand the gravity of Gods direction in our life, due to one man’s lack of faith he lost his kingship (1 Samuel 15:7-28) and created what could have been the annihilation of Israel, yet due to the faithful grace of his replacement, God brought a deliver to confront and destroy Satan’s design.

This is why God told Saul through the prophet Samuel: “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams,” (1 Samuel 15:22), as Saul attempted to rationalize disobeying God’s directive, stating that he didn’t kill the animals because he would sacrifice them to God; when God’s main point was that this wicked King, Agag should not live to yet bring an attempted genocide upon Gods chosen people centuries later.

Antiochus (IV) Epiphanes

King of the Seleucid Empire, one of the 4 generals of Alexander, who took the area of the great After murdering his brother, who had inherited the throne in the Seleucid dynasty, he came to power in 175 B.C.  In 170 B.C. Ptolemy VI of Egypt sought to recover territory then ruled over by Antiochus.  So Antiochus invaded Egypt and defeated Ptolemy VI and proclaimed himself king in Egypt.  This was his growth “in power to the south.”  On his return from this conquest, trouble broke out in Jerusalem so he decided to subdue Jerusalem (“the Beautiful Land,”). The people were subjugated, the temple desecrated, and the temple treasury plundered.  From this conquest Antiochus returned to Egypt in 168 B.C. but was forced by Rome to evacuate Egypt. On his return he determined to make the land of Israel a buffer state between himself and Egypt. He attacked and burned Jerusalem, killing multitudes. The Jews were forbidden to follow the Mosaic Law in observing the Sabbath, their annual feasts, and traditional sacrifices, and circumcision of children. Altars to idols were set up in Jerusalem and on December 16, 167 B.C., the Jews were ordered to offer unclean sacrifices and to eat swine’s flesh or be penalized by death.  He called himself Epiphanes, “the Illustrious One.” The Jews called him Epimanes, “the Madman.” He made Torah reading punishable by death, slaughtered a sow on the Altar and erected an idol to Zeus in the Holy of Holies = “The Abomination of Desolation”(Mt 24:15).

The Macabbean Revolt

Led by Mattathias, a patriotic priest, and his five sons; he died in 166 but his son Judas was an amazing military genius.  After 3 years of fighting, they threw off the yoke of the Seleucid Empire, thus establishing the rule of the Hasmonean priest-rulers for the next century (until Pompey’s conquest of Judea, 63 B.C.). They rededicated the Temple: 25th of Kislev, 165 B.C., which is celebrated as Channukah (John 10:22).

Pride and Self-respect

There is no such thing as good or healthy pride.  (Self-respect is a different issue, and based on our own respect due to us forcing ourselves to follow our own conscience, and do the right thing, when it cost us something, and it is then that I respect myself, not because somebody else attempts to tell me what a good person I am. Because I know the truth, and I am a sinner through and through. However, it is when I serve God rather than myself that I have a peace, and joy, and an internal sense of contentment, also referred to as self-respect, which this is not tainted by pride.)

Faith

Faith is Contingent upon Necessity

Faith is only possible during trials or tribulations (Many times these two words are synonymous), the Scripture says: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen,”(Romans 10:17) and is always focused towards what is not present, and the lacking of what is at hand, or what is necessary, but not seen.

Faith is a Relationship

It is a relationship with the living God who has proclaimed and acknowledged Himself in the Bible.  The verb and noun Greek words for faith, “Pisteuo” and “Pistis”, were first used (a relevant law of hermeneutics, that of “first mention”, is where you determine the first place or places a word is first used,  sake them out and ascertain its meaning according to the precedents lay down) in the koiné Greek, when a man would put his body weight on a staff, which mandated action by exercising (this action can be seen in movement, either toward something or away from something) faith in the staff.  It was also used of little chicks running to the protection of the hen during the time of storm or trouble.

Concerning biblical faith, there is no such thing as an “arms length” relationship in the application of faith.  Faith must be immediate, approximate, and deliberate (involving consequences); during a time of fear; which necessitates a belief, and confidence based upon God’s Word, that He is capable, consistent, and therefore worthy of our faith in Him.  It goes beyond asking for a particular answer to a problem, to that of trusting the problem fixer Himself, God.

Faith and Relationships

Faith is the essential commodity of any and every relationship; it is the backbone of human involvements with other humans.  I say this because God made it as such when he created us.  Moreover, he did this for a reason, because of the importance that it holds to Him.  In a marriage there may be times that love does not flourish, in that like is not even in the picture, yet they will return.  However, once fidelity is violated and trust is ultimately destroyed; by example in adultery, the relationship is never the same.  Yes, there are those rare exceptions, that people grow back together and have fantastic relationships; however my experience has been (as a counselor) that this is only (are always exceptions) possible concerning believers, and in the power of God.  In friendships, when trust is lost there is no more friendship, and depending on the gravity of the violation, there is usually never a chance for one is well.  The essential part of any relationship is faith, as God designed.  This is why when Adam, not trusting that God can handle the situation, believing the only way that he could guarantee that he would keep the woman, was by doing the same thing she did; betrayed God by displaying a lack of faith wherein sin entered humanity.  This is the reason why God stepped out of man’s presence, and created a situation that mandated that in order to reestablish a relationship with him, faith was necessary.

Faith and Logic

You ever wonder why he set up such a crazy scenario.  I say crazy because he made his logical being, yet he mandated such an ill logical turn of events in order for us to be restored.  In the logic of humanity, it appears to be crazy; that of fate of all of mankind hinges upon the execution of a Carpenter 2000 years ago in a country that was in slavery to the Roman Empire.  And fact that he was a King, and out of crown, a sovereign without a country, and that God without a throne; boggles the mind.  Yet his kingdom was not of this world, subjects the ones he served, and his crowning achievement was to lose his own life.  What better situation, to demand faith in.  It’s easy to believe something that’s close to what appears to be reality, he demands faith to believe something that appears to be just the opposite.  And this is what God did, because faith and Him, is just that important, and without it there is no relationship.

Faith and Love

Faith is an unusual commodity, whereas other virtues by contrast are axiomatic in their value, such as love.  I Corinthians 13:13, states:

“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”

However, this is not downplaying faith, which looks towards hope, but it is indicating that love is the motivation behind everything else, that of faith and hope.  Love is greater in that it is the reason why we need faith and therefore hope.  Love is the reason that God did what He did for us, yet the way He did it for us was by utilizing faith.  So we are never to downplay love, but we must understand that the human understanding of love, that of an emotional response, is not what God’s talking about in the first place.

Of the different Greek words for love, what God expects of us is a sacrificially putting another first, not the love of a brother, or a love of the lover; yet it is these two last relationships that we normally hone in on when we approach the subject of love.  There are those that think that Christ commands us to have emotional ineffective love for our brothers.  They mess up love by throwing in their own sensual perspective.

Do not get me wrong there is a place for that, but what God expects of us when we love one another; is that of a behavior and not an emotional feeling.  Love is simply doing something to put someone else before yourself as simplified by Jesus.  The tears that He spilt at Lazarus tomb were no doubt in sympathy for the pain of others (as well as the awareness of their lack of faith).  Yet, it was when He took the basin of water and washed feet, that He displayed true love that He expected of us to display to one another.

Faith is an Action

According to the “Hallman Bible Dictionary:

“Our English word “faith” comes from the Latin fides, as developed through the Old French words fei, and feid.  In the Middle English, (1150-1475) “faith” replaced a word that eventually evolved into “belief.”

“The verb form of “faith” dropped out of English usage toward the end of the 16th century.”

Therefore, just prior to the King James translation of the English Bible, with the verb form of “faith” (“Faithē,” or “Faitheth”?) no longer used, the English word “believe” was substituted.  However, with time, the word “believe” came to mean something completely different from the Greek word for “faith.”  This is because the English language is a living language that grows and changes with time; and in this situation, the English word “believe” came to mean a purely cognitive process.  This means that “believe,” as solely an intellectual pursuit, no longer was synonymous with the Greek words for “faith,” which mandated action.

Herein lies the problem, as we remember from school (simply put), a verb is an action; a noun is a person place or thing (though the thing can be an action).

And of the over 400 occasions that the word for “faith” is utilized in the New Testament,  240 times it is a verb, for which we do not have a corresponding English verb.

And yet of the 241 times that the noun form of “faith” is utilized in the New Testament, a majority of those times the noun still mandates an action (except when the article is used, such as: “the faith”, as an organization or system).  There are many words in the English, which are nouns, yet function as an action (act like a verb)5.

It is in understanding the difference between having belief, and having faith that we see so many problems in Christianity today.  Belief will not save you, only faith will.  And if we examine the Gospel of John, and see that it only uses the noun form of the word faith, for which we have no English word, this is why it uses the word “believe”: yet the understanding is that we must have faith. The English vernacular sounds funny, but where Christ says in John 1:12: 7

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name”

What it should say:

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that Faithē on his name”

Because in spite of the fact that we do not have an appropriate verb for the Greek word faith, our English word believe does not mean the same thing.  This is why the Scripture says: “devils also believe”6, yet, it is only a cognitive process, which does not produce salvation.  They believe that God is one God, because they have seen this with their own eyes, yet they are not willing to place their trust (Which defines and produces their actions) in God, they place their trust in Satan, and therefore their behaviors displayed this.

And while the Scripture says, “as a man thinketh, so is he”7, this passage has to do with the idea, that the thoughts that a man entertains will take root in him, and produce fruit or behaviors according to  those beliefs.  Yet, when it comes to faith, there is an added step of confidence, which involves having witnessed something that reinforces that belief.  And in the case of the believer, that confidence is according to God’s Word.  “For faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God”8

It is when, according to biblical examples, as well as the pictorial meaning of the words “Pistis” and “Pisteuo,” that we step out in some manner, by hanging our body upon God’s Word (not our own presumptions), believing and trusting in God, even though the situation may look, and even be what appears to be evil to us (as seen in the treatment of Joseph by his brothers; yet Joseph always exercised faith in God, knowing that God was at work even in the evil that had be fallen him, which he expressed when he told his brothers: “you meant for evil, but God meant for good”9), yet, continuing to believe in God to the point that it motivates our behavior, that we exercise biblical faith.

Faith is not primarily asking God for something, and believing He will give it to us.  Faith is trusting that the situation, environment or event we are in, is God’s Will, and He is trustworthy in that situation, no matter what it looks like. Faith is not a tool for us to use to change a situation, faith is God’s instrument in changing us concerning Him His Will, and His ability.

Faith is somewhat like prayer, in that they both look to be one thing, when in actually function in another, and produce a different effect than we planned on.  Within faith, there is a place for petition before the Lord, but this always takes a backseat to the fact that faith is, hanging one’s body on trusting God, and it is done in confidence because of whom God is, and shown Himself to be in His Word.

Biblical Tools of Interpretation is an ongoing topical series that examines diverse aspects of interpretation through the vantage point of the Greek and Hebrew languages.  Linguistics is the scientific study of language.  Several of the sub-fields of linguistics are: phonetics, which is concerned with the sounds of languages; phonology, with the way sounds are used in individual languages; morphology, with the structure of words; syntax, with the structure of phrases and sentences; and semantics, which is the study of meaning of words.  It is the semantics, or meaning of words on which this series primarily focuses. Other tools of grammar, such as figures of speech and other rhetorical devices shall also be examined to clarify the nuances of God’s Word, the Bible.  We believe that by digging through the layers of Holy Scripture, that Christ becomes more clearly seen as the focus of all of creation.  It has been said that by analyzing the original languages of the Bible, it is like adding color to the black and white picture of the English translation of God’s Word.  Our main focus is always on Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior of the world, God incarnate, He alone deserves preeminence in God’s Word.  God’s Word, the Holy Bible stands alone as our source of guidance and direction, and is our singular foundation for and of faithBiblical Tools of Interpretation is an outreach ministry of Faith Video Ministries Inc.  You may contact us at our e-mail address: blb@faithvideoministries.com

Faith Bible Ministries Blog ~ An Online Study of the Bible

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” ~~~~~~ This online Bible study series addresses primary New Testament words in their original language - Koinè Greek - as opposed to mainly using the English translations; which is like adding color to a black-and-white picture.
